LGBTQ+ Pride Month 2023

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning + Pride Month (LGBTQ+ Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ+) Americans. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBT Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans.

As we look back and move forward, we also want to recognize that the current state of human rights for LGBTQ people in the US. In the last couple of years, state lawmakers have targeted LGBTQ rights and have unleashed a torrent of anti-transgender bills—targeting transgender youth. The ACLU is currently tracking 490 anti-LGBTQ bills in the US.

UCSF LGBTQ+ RESOURCES

BCH LGBTQ+ Committee

The BCH Oakland LGBTQ+ committee is one of BCH's Employee Diversity Groups, which was created by a multidisciplinary task force to shine light on issues facing our patients, families, and staff. Originally named the Gender Workgroup, we seek to influence policies, electronic health records, community outreach, and offer solutions to unique problems. Supporting and lifting each other up is our goal with inclusion being a top priority.

Why is there a need for the BCH LGBTQ+ Committee?

The communities of both sides of the bay have many similarities but also many contrasts. We seek to help those in our area with unique issues and policies of BCO Oakland. The goal of our group is to weigh in on issues that affect us as workers, our patients and their families. We help create / shape policy and give space to ensure our voices are heard.

What do you hope to accomplish with the BCH LGBTQ+ Committee?

The BCH-Oakland LGBTQ+ Committee tackles important issues in efforts to make the Hospital more welcoming to LGBTQ+ patients, families, and employees. Our work includes efforts to have patients and employees feel safer, more respected, and better understood. This allows better trust and more honest conversations to take place between patients, families, and providers, ultimately leading to the delivery of higher quality medical care. It also encourages a more vibrant and diverse workforce, more representative of the patients and families we serve. The LGBTQ+ Committee strives for a healthier Hospital community.
