Marsha Treadwell, PhD
Professor In Residence, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology, UCSF School of Medicine, Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Co-Chair
Dr. Treadwell is a Professor In Residence of Pediatrics in the Division of Hematology at UCSF. She has spent her professional career at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Oakland campus, specializing in helping children and families cope with the stress of living with medical conditions and treatments. Early in her career she met young adults with sickle cell disease, who inspired her with their resiliency in the face of excruciating painful episodes, repeated hospitalizations, and potentially shortened lifespans. Dr. Treadwell eventually devoted her career to clinical care, research and community advocacy for individuals with sickle cell disease and their families. She is the Co-Director of the UCSF Sickle Cell Center of Excellence, a world-renowned center that improves clinical outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with sickle cell and their families across the lifespan. This mission is accomplished through culturally responsive, comprehensive medical care and innovative research.
As a health services researcher and clinical psychologist, Dr. Treadwell leads an internationally recognized program of research. She has led multi-institutional, national and international, interdisciplinary teams conducting research on how social drivers, psychological and behavioral factors, and organizational structures and processes impact the health and well-being of individuals living with complex chronic conditions and their families. Dr. Treadwell has been Principal or Co-Investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Agency for Health Research and Quality, and foundations. Dr. Treadwell’s established program of teaching and mentoring is complementary to her research. She has provided training and support for high school, undergraduate and professional students including economically disadvantaged and/or first-generation college for over 35 years, promoting their success in the provision of clinical care and conduct of biomedical research. As inaugural co-chair of the Benioff Children’s Hospitals Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (DEI/AR) Council since 2018, Dr. Treadwell leads an institution wide action plan to advance inclusive access to care for all children and families.
Dr. Treadwell received her doctorate in clinical child psychology from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and advanced training in clinical research from UCSF. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, dancer, avid reader and world traveler. She and her family enjoy the vibrancy of the Bay Area with its plethora of outdoor activities, arts and great food.
