BCH DEI/AR COUNCIL DATA & REPORTS

DEI/AR Council's Annual Action Plans

The DEI/AR Council is proud to present our Action Plans for Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. These annual action plans were created collaboratively by the BCH DEI/AR Council, Senior Leadership, and the Board of Directors. Moving forward, the work must continue to be collaborative since we know that the impacts of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism occur at individual, institutional and systemic levels.

This is our time to build an institution that is safe for all who enter. This is our time to speak the hard truths and to hold one another accountable. This is our time to be intentional in our thinking and in our actions. Our Action Plan for Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals is about our behaviors and our priorities. We embarked on this journey together two years ago and have come very far. There is much further that we have to go, there is much that we have to do. And we can do it if we do it together, with courage, with spirit and with love.

DEI/AR Year in Review

A summary of the accomplishments, activitivies, and intiatives as we advance diveristy, equity, inclusion and anti-racism within the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals.

DEI Needs Assessment - November 2019

In our needs assessment, the majority of BCH employees recognized and embraced that we work in an institution that has at its core the mission to provide the best healthcare to every child. At the same time, Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and other groups (LGBTQ+) experienced disrespect and excluding behaviors most often in our workplace. And our analysis across BCH job categories shows that the most common race/ethnicity is White amongst management and professionals while BIPOC predominate among administrative support and service workers. We cannot provide the best healthcare to all children when we have such disparities in our workforce, when we perpetuate racist structures.

Workforce Diversity Reports

This report describes the diversity of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals staff at both the Oakland (BCH OAK) and San Francisco (BCH SF) campuses. Race/ethnicity, gender, and job category were available for staff through EE0-1 reports, which is a compliance survey mandated by federal statue to compile company employment data to be categorized by race/ethnicity, gender and job category. Staff data were compared to both the patient demographics as well as the 2020 Bay Area Census data, including the following 9 counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma. Data from the two campuses do not always align and are presented as either BCH Oakland (BCH OAK) or BCH San Francisco (BCH SF) data.

Patient Care Diversity Reports

This report describes the diversity of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals patients demographics and patient experience both the Oakland (BCH OAK) and San Francisco (BCH SF) campuses. We examined whether our patient's race/ethnicity and/or language affected the quality of care they received at BCH. We also examined race/ethnicity, patient type (inpatient vs. outpatient) and insurance for patients. Patient data were compared to both the staff demographics as well as the 2020 Bay Area Census data, including the following 9 counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma. Data from the two campuses do not always align and are presented as either BCH Oakland (BCH OAK) or BCH San Francisco (BCH SF) data.
