Programs and Services

The UCSF BCH DEI Council is charged with overseeing and supporting progress toward achieving the vision of diversity and inclusion for the BCH enterprise. The specific actions of the BCH DEI Council will be:

1. Professional Development and Trainings

Objective #1: Empower BCH faculty, staff and trainees to become leaders and advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Develop programs and workshops that reflect our Mission, Vision and Values towards diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Provide BCH’s leadership, faculty, staff, and trainees with information, strategies and tools to enable them to lead diversity efforts within their specified areas
  • Encourage the development of BCH’s staff and enhance their abilities to address issues that may arise from employee differences
  • Encourage sharing of evidence-based best practices
  • Encourage staff to develop and share information about educational programs that address diversity issues

Objective #2: Provide UCSF BCH leadership with information, strategies, and tools to enable them to lead diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

  • Organize a diversity-related training session for senior leaders across the Children’s enterprise
  • Collaborate with other entities across UCSF Health committed to diversity, equity and inclusion

2. Cultural Assessment

Objective: Provide the BCH community with an understanding of its baseline cultural competency among BCH faculty and staff. Promote and recognize patients’ rights to their cultural beliefs, values, and practices; such factors should be understood, respected, and considered when providing culturally competent care at BCH.

  • Modify and conduct workforce cultural assessments to elicit relevant cultural competency data for purposes of raising awareness and educating the BCH community
  • Analyze and assess results, including creating special reports to CLG membership and BCH board

3. Employee Biases Evaluation

Objective: Create opportunities for senior leadership, faculty and staff to acknowledge, evaluate, and address their unconscious/implicit biases

  • Modify and conduct employee biases evaluations to elicit unconscious biases data for purposes of raising awareness and educating the BCH community
  • Analyze and assess results, including creating special reports to CLG membership and BCH board
  • Utilize evaluations to inform workforce development initiatives and trainings
